They head out on a space mission with an assignment to verify that Venus is, indeed, the planet of love. A week passes; they return; Simone dismally reveals that their mission has proven that Venus is, in fact, "a cauldron of sorrow and soot." Hollis reminds her that their bosses, in the capital, have ordered them to hush up their finding, and that in any case, the astronaut's life is all about the glory. Meanwhile, Mae, a cadet flyer, has caught Hollis's eye. His next mission is real near, and he'll need a warmish bunkmate, for nights are long near Mars.
